RETROSPECTIVE ANALYSIS — updated 2026-08-08. Compiled from the dated public sources listed at the end of this issue; all figures are quoted from those sources.
April 2026 marked the top of the DDR4 spot blow-off — and the start of a polarized market.
On Apr 2, DigiTimes reported that DDR4 16Gb spot prices had finally begun to decline after a roughly 2,200% surge over one year, as the market split between contract-locked hyperscale demand and collapsing consumer demand. TrendForce’s Apr 7 note showed March consumer DRAM still surging on limited capacity. On Apr 23, SK hynix posted a record quarterly profit on AI memory demand. TrendForce’s April server-DIMM commentary described suppliers holding "absolute pricing power" with bottomed inventories.
A declining DDR4 spot print after a 22x run is not a crash — it is the end of panic-buying at the margin. For the used market, April is best read as the month asking prices stopped chasing spot upward and started tracking replacement economics: what a tested, warrantied pull is worth against a new module that mostly cannot be bought at all.
