RETROSPECTIVE ANALYSIS — updated 2026-08-08. Compiled from the dated public sources listed at the end of this issue; all figures are quoted from those sources.

The month in one line

May 2026 paired another brutal primary-market forecast with the clearest public snapshot yet of the US used-server channel.

Primary market

TrendForce’s May 14 pricing survey put conventional DRAM contract prices up another 58–63% QoQ for 2Q26 (LPDDR5X +78–83%), with supplier inventories described as extremely low and incremental supply prioritized to high-capacity RDIMMs for AI servers.

Secondary market

US used-server channel commentary (ServerMonkey’s May market update) described refurbished-server-plus-memory as the dominant configuration shipped, and put DDR4 and high-capacity HDD recovery values at historic highs — materially improving decommissioning and trade-in economics for fleet owners. This is the single best public window into the market AltoChip trades in, and it matches what the DDR4 EOL arc predicts: retired fleets became the DDR4 supply.

What it meant for used server memory

Sellers of decommissioned 32GB DDR4 gained pricing power; buyers gained certainty problems. Tested, documented modules with serial-number traceability commanded the premium — condition and evidence, not just capacity, set the price.
