RETROSPECTIVE ANALYSIS — updated 2026-08-08. Compiled from the dated public sources listed at the end of this issue; all figures are quoted from those sources.
Q1 2026 was the largest quarterly DRAM price increase on record: TrendForce later confirmed conventional DRAM contract prices up 93–98% QoQ and industry revenue up 81% QoQ to roughly $97B. Server DRAM led (Jan 5 projection: +60%+ QoQ) as capacity steered to AI-server RDIMMs. Micron’s FQ2 (ended Feb 26) revenue hit $23.86B, ~+194% YoY; its Crucial consumer exit took effect in late February. DDR4 16Gb spot peaked at the very end of the quarter after a ~2,200% one-year run.
The quarter’s three levers: (1) the DDR4 exit map published Jan 19 — remaining new supply a closing window; (2) hyperscale long-term agreements absorbing primary output; (3) shortage-duration guidance stretching to 2028–2030 (Nanya, SK Group), which reset every fleet operator’s replace-vs-run calculus toward running DDR4 platforms longer.
Refurb-channel commentary (PCSP) put DDR4 ECC RDIMM prices up roughly 60–80% between early 2025 and Q1 2026, and described modules pulled from decommissioned Dell 14/15G and HPE Gen10 fleets as increasingly the only accessible DDR4 supply for most buyers — vendor-blog sourcing, but consistent with every primary-market datapoint above.
Q1 is when the 32GB DDR4 used market changed character: from clearance channel to primary supply. The winners were sellers who could prove what they were shipping — per-module testing, serial-number lists, documented condition. That thesis is the founding premise of this desk.
