Quarter in review

Q2 2026 was the quarter the shortage stopped accelerating and started entrenching. TrendForce’s surveys put conventional DRAM contract prices up another 58–63% QoQ, on top of Q1’s record. DDR4 16Gb spot began declining in early April after a roughly 2,200% one-year surge (DigiTimes) — a top, not a collapse — as the market polarized between contract-locked hyperscale demand and weak consumer demand. SK hynix posted a record Q1-CY26 profit in April; shortage-duration consensus hardened toward 2027–2030 across Micron, Nanya and SK Group commentary.

Structural drivers

Cloud providers locked multi-quarter supply via long-term agreements; suppliers held what TrendForce called "absolute pricing power" with bottomed inventories; incremental capacity went to high-capacity DDR5 RDIMMs and HBM for AI servers. DDR4 had no seat at the fab table.

Secondary market

The US used-server channel had its clearest public moment of the year: May commentary (ServerMonkey) described DDR4 recovery values at historic highs and refurbished-server-plus-memory as the dominant shipped configuration. Decommissioned, tested 32GB DDR4 ECC RDIMMs were, for most buyers, the DDR4 market.

What it meant for used server memory

Q2 confirmed the used market’s new role: not a discount alternative but primary supply for installed platforms. Pricing power shifted to holders of tested, documented inventory; evidence (test reports, SN lists) became the differentiator between commodity pulls and premium supply.
