Optical Module Compatibility: Why a Matching Connector Is Not Enough

Vendor coding, platform checks, firmware and what information we need to confirm compatibility before quoting.

Updated October 2026 · AltoChip team · General reference — project specifics are confirmed in each quotation.

Same connector, different outcome

Two modules with the same form factor, speed and connector can still behave differently in the same switch. Many platforms read the module's EEPROM and check the vendor code; some warn, some disable the port, some need a configuration command to accept third-party optics. Firmware versions can change this behavior.

What we confirm before quoting

Anything we cannot confirm from documentation is marked to be validated in the quotation — usually through a sample on your equipment before volume.

What we do not claim

We do not describe optics as "100% compatible" or "certified" for a platform unless that is documented for the specific product. Compatibility is confirmed per project, in writing.
