Typical uses

Virtualization clusters, web/app tiers, branch compute; anywhere rack space matters more than expansion.

Platform at a glance

CPU supportIntel Xeon Scalable 1st/2nd Gen (Skylake-SP / Cascade Lake), 2 sockets
Memory platform24 × DDR4 RDIMM/LRDIMM slots; DDR4-2666 with 1st Gen CPUs, DDR4-2933 with 2nd Gen; up to 3TB with LRDIMMs
Drives & RAID8–10 × 2.5" SAS/SATA/NVMe · PERC H730P/H740P RAID
PCIe & acceleratorsUp to 3 PCIe 3.0 slots; low-profile only — no double-width GPU support in 1U
Power & networkingDual hot-plug PSU 495W–1100W · 4 × 1GbE or 10GbE NDC options

Memory rules & limits

RDIMM and LRDIMM must not be mixed. 2933 modules on 1st Gen CPUs clock down to 2666. Populate channels evenly (6-channel CPUs) for full bandwidth.

How it compares

vs R740: same platform in 2U with far more drive bays and PCIe slots. Choose R640 for density, R740 for expansion.
